The Entrepreneurial Journey usually starts as an idea and evolves into a sustainable solution. Our methods start with a Business Model canvas and a lot of research to really understand the problem being solved and who cares about the problem. Entrepreneurs (called Fledgy Micro-Enterprises)work with the Fledge no matter what stage they are, including bigger successful companies who are looking for creative and innovative solutions to adapt to changing problems and solutions. We have a frequent pitch competition called 99 Problems but a Pitch Ain't One where people have 99 seconds to pitch their idea and get the votes of the crowd. The winner gets $99. # Entrepreneurial Journey – The Fledge Program ## Overview The Entrepreneurial Journey is a community-driven entrepreneurship development program hosted by The Fledge in Lansing, Michigan. The program provides a structured yet flexible pathway for individuals to explore, develop, and grow business ideas while receiving mentorship, education, and community support. Rather than functioning as a traditional accelerator focused solely on high-growth startups, the Entrepreneurial Journey focuses on **inclusive entrepreneurship**, supporting founders from a wide variety of backgrounds and industries. The program is designed to help individuals move from: idea → experimentation → business formation → sustainable growth ## Philosophy The Entrepreneurial Journey is built around several core principles: ### Inclusive Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship should be accessible to everyone, not only those with capital, networks, or formal business education. The program intentionally supports: - first-time entrepreneurs - microbusiness owners - community-based businesses - historically underserved founders - individuals transitioning from poverty or economic instability ### Learning by Doing Participants are encouraged to experiment with ideas, test markets, and iterate quickly rather than waiting for a perfect business plan. Entrepreneurship is treated as a **practice**, not a theoretical exercise. ### Community-Based Support Entrepreneurs learn alongside other entrepreneurs. The program fosters peer mentorship, collaboration, and shared learning within a supportive community. ## Program Structure The Entrepreneurial Journey typically includes several components. ### Weekly Meetups Regular gatherings bring entrepreneurs together to: - share updates - discuss challenges - receive feedback - learn from guest speakers - connect with mentors These meetings create consistency and accountability while also building a strong peer network. ### Coaching and Mentorship Participants receive guidance in areas such as: - business modeling - pricing strategies - marketing and customer development - financial planning - operational design Mentorship may come from experienced entrepreneurs, ecosystem partners, or subject matter experts. ### Workshops and Training Workshops help participants develop key entrepreneurial skills including: - customer discovery - business model design - financial literacy - legal structures - branding and storytelling ### Peer Learning Participants benefit from the collective experience of other founders in the program. Entrepreneurs share: - lessons learned - tools and resources - connections - collaboration opportunities ## Typical Entrepreneur Pathway Participants often move through several stages. ### Stage 1 – Idea Exploration Entrepreneurs clarify their ideas and identify potential customers. Activities include: - identifying problems to solve - testing initial assumptions - exploring market opportunities ### Stage 2 – Validation Entrepreneurs begin testing their products or services with real customers. Activities include: - prototyping - early sales - refining offerings based on feedback ### Stage 3 – Business Formation Entrepreneurs formalize their businesses and begin operating. Activities include: - registering the business - developing revenue streams - establishing basic operations ### Stage 4 – Growth Entrepreneurs expand their customer base and improve operational efficiency. Activities include: - scaling marketing - improving financial systems - accessing capital ## Integration with the Ecosystem The Entrepreneurial Journey is connected to the broader Michigan entrepreneurial ecosystem. Participants may be referred to: - Small Business Development Center (SBDC) - regional accelerators - capital access programs - technical assistance providers - industry-specific mentors This integration allows founders to move from **community incubation** to more advanced ecosystem resources as their businesses grow. ## Impact Programs like the Entrepreneurial Journey help create: - new small businesses - job creation - local economic resilience - stronger community networks - pathways out of poverty through entrepreneurship By lowering barriers to business creation, the program contributes to a more equitable entrepreneurial economy.
